What you should know
Workers should understand the terms of their employment and keep a copy of the written particulars or contract provided by their employer. Sierra Leone's Employment Act, 2023 addresses wages, working time, leave, freedom of association, complaints, discipline and termination.
Workers may also have protection when exercising lawful employment rights, participating in legitimate trade-union activity, raising complaints or reporting unsafe conditions.
A dismissal or disciplinary action is not automatically lawful simply because an employer has taken it. If you believe you were unfairly dismissed, penalised for raising a concern or denied an employment entitlement, seek advice promptly because procedures and time limits may apply.
Legal rights and available remedies depend on the facts of each situation. Contact A4A if you need advice about how the law applies to you.
When to seek help
If you are unsure how the law applies to your circumstances, if your rights may have been infringed, or if you have been arrested, detained, threatened or placed at immediate risk, seek legal assistance.
